People with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) typically lead more isolated lives than others because CF makes them susceptible to infections that can be life threatening. In addition to this, they often spend a considerable amount of time in the hospital and at Dr. appointments. This isolation has been tempered by social media, blogs, and the internet in general.

According to a study done on the impact of social media on patients with CF, the results indicated that people with CF are actively using social media for support related to their CF and there is a positive emotional response to social media with increased use and interaction. (Faust, 2014)

On a personal note, I am closely affected by Cystic Fibrosis. I have seen how this disease isolates people and creates emotional stress. The ability to "log on" and talk with someone who truly knows what you are going through creates a sense of being understood and connection with others. The benefit of social media, blogs and the internet should not be underestimated for people who live with CF.
